Dr. John Ziegler on the Dianabol myth

john ziegler One of the most enduring myths in the history of anabolic steroids is the belief that Dr. John Ziegler created Dianabol. The truth is that Ziegler had nothing to do with the invention of Dianabol.
The real inventors were European organic chemists who worked in a Swiss laboratory.

Dianabol (Methandrostenolone or Methandienone boldenone price) [ 17-beta-hydroxy-17-alpha-methyandrosta-1,4-diene-3-one ] was synthesized by organic chemists who worked at CIBA Pharmaceuticals in Switzerland. The European researchers who created Dianabol probably did not hear of Dr. John Siegler either before or after its development, and certainly did not collaborate with him.

All the advantages of his invention belong to the following outstanding chemists who conducted research and research on steroid hormones for CIBA Pharmaceuticals (Switzerland): Albert Wettstein, Alfred Fame, Charles Meister, Ludwig Emann, Ernst Wischer, Hans Peter Frey and Walter Voser. They were all part of the team that first described the synthesis of methandrostenolone in the Swiss-based scientific journal Helvetica Chimica Acta.

  • Meystre C, Frey H, Voser W, Wettstein A. Gewinnung von 1,4-bisdehydro-3-oxosteroid. HeIv Chim Acta 1956; 39: 734-42.

The United States Patent Registrants for Methandrostenolone (US 2900398) are listed as Wettstein, Fame, Meystre and Ludwig Ehmann of CIBA. The patent application relates only to the 1956 Helvetica Chimica Acta study mentioned above.
These researchers were not small scientists. Wettstein collaborated with Leopold Ruzicka’s research group, which received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939 for their outstanding work on testosterone synthesis. The discovery of Dianabol was another success in his career.

Why then was Dr. John Ziegler mistakenly considered the inventor of Dianabol?

The fictional story of how, in a small American city, a doctor created a synthetic anabolic steroid to improve the performance of American Olympic athletes against their Russian counterparts who used testosterone was certainly created as a weapon in the service of US nationalism. during the cold war. Misinformation helped increase the “steroid mythology” by constantly telling the story in bodybuilding magazines as well as through journalism.
While Dr. John Ziegler was not really the inventor of Dianabol, this does not detract from the history of steroid use in the United States. … Ziegler helped American athletes take steroids in general and Dianabol in particular.

Ziegler was the first person to administer Dianabol to athletic athletes shortly after its introduction by CIBA in 1958. He had access to the CIBA laboratory at Summit (New Jersey) in the 1950s and was already administering Testosterone Propionate for “research purposes.” However, there was no research on the synthesis of methandrostenolone at the CIBA facility in New Jersey: all research on the synthesis of the steroid hormone was reserved for the headquarters in Switzerland.
When Dianabol appeared, CIBA (NJ) asked Ziegler to appoint Dianabol to Olympic weightlifters in late 1959. Subsequently, he prescribed 10 mg of Dianabol per day (two doses of 5 mg) to weightlifters John Grimek, Bill March, Tony Garci and Louis Riquet. They were the first athletes to use Dianabol.

Although anabolic steroids such as testosterone propionate, methyltestosterone, and nilevar were already being used by some West Coast bodybuilders when CIBA introduced Dianabol in 1958 and Dr.Ziegler began prescribing it, steroid use quickly became integrated into bodybuilding and weight lifting and then gradually spread to all sports. Dianabol has become the favorite steroid among American bodybuilders and athletes. It remains one of the most popular steroids used by modern bodybuilders today. John Ziegler will undoubtedly continue to have a special place in his hearts for the millions of athletes who have taken Dianabol.
